Connell holds court in Buna

Buna, TX- When standing around the basketball gym, or even the tennis court, it’s easy to see who the leaders and true work horses are. They’re always the players studying the game, looking for ways to improve themselves and finding opportunities to put in extra work.

It’s easy to see why senior Point Guard, Garrison Connell is that guy for the Buna Cougars. In his 4 years on the Cougar Men’s Basketball squad, he has not only improved his personal game but the entire team’s mentality and work ethic.

“I’ve always enjoyed Basketball ever since I started playing Little Dribblers around 6 years old. I had 2 older brothers that would teach me things and always beat me and make me better.”  No doubt this is where Garrison gets a lot of his competitive nature. He started playing AAU basketball in the 5th grade in Beaumont and has continued every summer since, keeping him playing at some of the highest levels throughout Texas and Louisiana.

Like most high school athletes, Garrison has lettered in other sports while at Buna; football, golf and perhaps his favorite sport, tennis. “I really enjoy Tennis because of the nature of the one-on-one competition, but my passion grew towards basketball and how the team spirit is more important to me now.”

His success is easily shown through his career at Buna, as he has earned a lot of academic and athletic accolades. He’s currently ranked 14th in his senior class and has a 3.9 GPA in the classroom. His sophomore season he was named 2nd Team All District and during his junior season he was named 1st Team All District and 1st Team All Region under Head Coach Bryan Whitmire.

This season, new Head Coach DJ Wilson comes in with a very aggressive style of coaching heavy towards defense and he has really appreciated the style of play and leadership that Garrison has contributed. “It’s a blessing to have G on the court, it’s like always having another coach out there. He has not only shown he can score, but what has impressed me the most is his ability to defend.” said Coach Wilson.  Garrison looks to be continuing another great season as he is averaging 22 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals per game.

Garrison is hoping to continue playing basketball as he pursues his education to become a teacher and coach. “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, and I feel like it’s my calling”.  But for now, his focus is strictly on the rest of the district games ahead of his team as the Cougars take on state ranked #16 East Chambers this Friday at home.
