Orange, TX– Anyone looking for competitive High School Basketball, won’t have to look far this year as Orange County has some of the best area High School teams that SETX has to offer.
19-4A is not only one of the largest districts in the state, but arguably one of the most competitive. With the #3 Silsbee Tigers and #16 LC-M Bears, 19-4A looks to have a fierce competition within and as a serious competitor for a state tournament berth.
Silsbee Tigers– The district favorite again, the Tigers return a group of 3rd year starters that had a great playoff run last year eventually losing to the 4A State Champion. Led by Junior sensation 6’4 Jared Harris and Junior PG (and football prodigy) Dre’lon Miller, Silsbee will most definitely continue to dominate the SETX basketball scene deep into the UIL playoffs.
LC-M Battlin’ Bears– This year’s squad looks to rebound from a deep playoff run last year after losing in the Regional Quarterfinals to Booker T Washington. Returning eight seniors, the Bears are experienced and ready to compete for a district title. The Bears are led by 2021-2022 19-4A leading scorer, Senior Ben Elliott, along with Seniors DaMarion Morris, Noah Fuller, and sharpshooter Ty Blackmon. Rounding out the Bears is Junior standout Alatheon Winn. Overall, this LCM team has the depth and experience to make another serious run through district and into the playoffs.
Bridge City Cardinals– Returning 9 out of its 10 players from last year’s young squad, the Cardinals look to rebound from a disappointing 2021-2022 campaign. Leading this year’s squad is captain and offensive leader Walker Britten. Britten will continue to run the offense and share the PG duties with Junior Aiden Gutierrez. Lincoln Breaux will continue to drive the defensive and rebounding efforts along with 2021-2022 2nd team All District Bryce Linder. Joining the squad this year is Freshman Aaden Bush who was a middle school standout and looks to bring the same energy to the varsity level. Bridge City is a true contender for a playoff spot this year and looks to be in the hunt come February.
Vidor Pirates- After landing their new head coach Joseph Hoyt, the Pirates look to make a serious district run to compete for one of the prestigious playoff spots. This year’s squad has a much different look and feel about them. Not a very big group, but they transition well and shoot the ball extremely well. Sophomore Guard Bryce Loftin and Senior Xander Lindsey can score quickly and keep pouring it on. Defending the rim and helping in the lane is Junior Brayden Root. This team is disciplined and seems to make clutch plays down the stretch. Look for an upset down the stretch by this group.
West Orange Stark Mustangs– The Mustangs are looking to rebuild from a playoff run last year that featured several graduating seniors including the district MVP. Returning this year is All District Senior Darren “Byrd” Anderson. Anderson will lead the team defensively along with Junior PG Andrew Cooper. WOS may be young this year but do not count them out from competing for a playoff spot. Their experience from last year’s playoffs along with a difficult preseason may indeed just have Coach Castille’s team ready to win that spot.
Lumberton Raiders– Returning a group of well-coached players, you can bet Lumberton’s Coach Josh Mitchell will have his guys ready each game to compete. Fresh off a long football playoff run, Mitchell finally has all his players on the court, and they are starting to play well together. Senior Guard, Brady Fuselier will bring his athleticism and help lead a very aggressive starting five that includes Junior SG Jackson Spears and newcomer Sophomore PG Ty Reyes. Reyes transferred from La Vernia High School near San Antonio, TX and already has the making of another great SETX player.
Jasper Bulldogs– With the Orangefield Bobcats dropping down in classification, that left an opening for the Bulldogs to join 19-4A. Jasper returns a young group from last year’s squad that went 3-7 in district 17-4A. Looking to be more physical this year, Jasper will be led by 6’5” Sophomore Forward Kiotti Armstrong. Returning and running the offense is Senior PG Kameron Adams. Adams is also a very disciplined shooter from the perimeter. Coach Weller will have his team ready to compete for one of the 4 playoff spots
One thing is for sure, look for another extremely tight race in 19-4A this year. District play cranks up tonight as BC travels to Silsbee, WOS travels to Vidor, Lumberton travels to Jasper and LCM has a bye.

Connell holds court in Buna

Buna, TX- When standing around the basketball gym, or even the tennis court, it’s easy to see who the leaders and true work horses are. They’re always the players studying the game, looking for ways to improve themselves and finding opportunities to put in extra work.
It’s easy to see why senior Point Guard, Garrison Connell is that guy for the Buna Cougars. In his 4 years on the Cougar Men’s Basketball squad, he has not only improved his personal game but the entire team’s mentality and work ethic.
“I’ve always enjoyed Basketball ever since I started playing Little Dribblers around 6 years old. I had 2 older brothers that would teach me things and always beat me and make me better.” No doubt this is where Garrison gets a lot of his competitive nature. He started playing AAU basketball in the 5th grade in Beaumont and has continued every summer since, keeping him playing at some of the highest levels throughout Texas and Louisiana.
Like most high school athletes, Garrison has lettered in other sports while at Buna; football, golf and perhaps his favorite sport, tennis. “I really enjoy Tennis because of the nature of the one-on-one competition, but my passion grew towards basketball and how the team spirit is more important to me now.”
His success is easily shown through his career at Buna, as he has earned a lot of academic and athletic accolades. He’s currently ranked 14th in his senior class and has a 3.9 GPA in the classroom. His sophomore season he was named 2nd Team All District and during his junior season he was named 1st Team All District and 1st Team All Region under Head Coach Bryan Whitmire.
This season, new Head Coach DJ Wilson comes in with a very aggressive style of coaching heavy towards defense and he has really appreciated the style of play and leadership that Garrison has contributed. “It’s a blessing to have G on the court, it’s like always having another coach out there. He has not only shown he can score, but what has impressed me the most is his ability to defend.” said Coach Wilson. Garrison looks to be continuing another great season as he is averaging 22 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals per game.
Garrison is hoping to continue playing basketball as he pursues his education to become a teacher and coach. “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, and I feel like it’s my calling”. But for now, his focus is strictly on the rest of the district games ahead of his team as the Cougars take on state ranked #16 East Chambers this Friday at home.
